I was fortunate to have been spared acne or pimples as a teenager. While my friends were busy buying cover up and trying to clear their skin, I was busy buying hot pink lip gloss. I didn’t have to pay much attention to my skin. I did have the occasional pimple but that was about it.
However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. In my thirties, my skin started to break out. At first, it only happened once in a while. Then, it started happening more and more often. I began to break out and freak out. All. The. Time.
I turned to google. According to WebMD, about 30% of women break out after their teenage years. However, learning that others were dealing with the same issue provided little comfort. I wanted clear skin and I wanted it now.
There are many effective ways to treat acne. There are over the counter treatments and dermatologist treatments. A friend told me to contact Maria Tabone, a Wellness Consultant, Registered Yoga Teacher and Healing Foods Chef. Maria believes that diet can have a big effect on your skin. She told me there have been studies that have shown dairy can cause breakouts. She also advised me to limit processed foods and refined carbohydrates such as white flour, rice, and sugar, and start eating more whole grains.
Maria also said that since acne is an inflammatory condition, omega 3 fatty acids can be helpful because they help prevent and reduce inflammation. You can find omega 3 fatty acids in salmon, sardines, flax seeds, chia seeds and almonds.
Lastly, she recommended that I drink a lot of water to keep my skin hydrated.
Am I on my way to clear skin? I’ll keep you posted.

I’m right there with you, Judie. I had fantastic skin as a youth and am
now battling blemishes and gravity. So unfair! I’ve also tried to work ont diet but I really find exfoliating a great help.
Eileen, thank you for reading my post and for your comment. I agree exfoliating helps a lot. Here’s to brighter skin!
